Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Class 10 English Poetry — UP Board & CBSE
1. Which poems are the most important for the Central Idea question?
While you should prepare all of them, Dust of Snow, Fire and Ice, A Tiger in the Zoo, and Amanda! are historically the most repeated in board exams.
2. Can I write the 4 lines of the poem that are already printed in the exam paper?
No. For UP Board students attempting the "Write 4 lines of a poem" question, the instructions strictly state: "Do not copy the lines given in this question paper." If you copy the extract given in the reading/MCQ section, you will get a zero.
Tip
Always memorize at least two different 4-line stanzas (e.g., one from Dust of Snow and one from Fog) so you have a backup if one appears on the paper.
3. Does punctuation matter when writing the 4 lines of a poem?
Yes, absolutely. Examiners check for exact capital letters (the first letter of every new line in a poem is usually capitalized, even if it's not a new sentence), commas, and full stops as printed in the NCERT textbook. Minor punctuation errors can cost you half a mark.
4. In the UP Board, do I have to choose between the Central Idea and writing 4 lines?
No, both are compulsory. Under the latest UP Board pattern:
Question 27 asks you to answer a short poetry question OR write 4 lines of a poem (3 Marks).
Question 28 asks you to write the Central Idea of one out of three given poems (3 Marks).
You must prepare for both.
5. Is it mandatory to mention the poet's name in the Central Idea?
While the question doesn't explicitly say "name the poet," omitting it is a major mistake. The very first sentence of your Central Idea must contain the poem's title and the poet's name. This proves to the examiner immediately that you know the facts, which often secures the first mark instantly.
6. Is the poem "Animals" still in the syllabus?
No. "Animals" by Walt Whitman was removed during the NCERT syllabus rationalization. It is no longer tested in either UP Board or CBSE exams. You only need to study the 10 poems listed in the current First Flight textbook.
7. For CBSE, will I get direct questions like "What is the rhyme scheme?"
CBSE rarely asks for just the rhyme scheme anymore. They use competency-based formats. For example, instead of asking "What is the rhyme scheme?", they will ask: "How does the regular rhyme scheme in 'A Tiger in the Zoo' contrast with the tiger's internal state of mind?" You need to apply the literary device to the poem's meaning.
