Got Low Marks in CBSE Boards? How to Give a Re-Exam to Increase Your Percentage | CBSE Improvement Exam Rules 2026

๐Ÿšจ The CBSE Board results are out, and you have officially passed!

But instead of celebrating, you are feeling disappointed. You worked hard, but your marks in Physics, Maths, or Accountancy are much lower than you expected.

If your marks are ruining your overall percentage, do not lose hope!

You do not have to live with those low marks forever. CBSE gives you a golden opportunity to rewrite your exams and boost your score through the CBSE Improvement Exam.

Whether you are in Class 10 or Class 12, here is the complete, official guide to the CBSE Improvement Exam rules for 2026.

1. Compartment vs. Improvement: What is the exact difference?

Parents and students often confuse these two exams.

  • Compartment Exam: This is for students who have failed in 1 or 2 subjects.

  • Improvement Exam: This is for students who have successfully passed all subjects but are unhappy with their scores and want to increase their percentage.

2. How Many Subjects Can I Give the Re-Exam In?

This is where the official CBSE rules are very strict. You have two distinct options depending on how many subjects you want to improve:

  • Option A: The Same Year (Supplementary Exam) If you want to save your year and apply for college admissions immediately, you can appear for the Improvement Exam in ONLY ONE subject during the Supplementary Exams held in July.

  • Option B: The Next Year (Main Exam) If you want to improve your marks in more than one subject (up to 5 core subjects), you cannot do it in the same year. You will have to wait and appear for the regular board exams next year (in February/March) as a "Private Candidate."

3. The "Best of Two" Rule: What if my marks decrease?

This is the most highly searched question on Google: "Can I give the board exam again to increase my percentage without the risk of losing marks?"

  • The Official CBSE Rule: You have absolutely nothing to lose! CBSE follows the "Better of the Two" rule.

  • Your percentage can only go up, never down!

4. How to Apply for the CBSE Improvement Exam

  • For Regular Students (Same Year): You cannot apply for this directly online. You must contact your school principal.

  • The school will fill out the LOC (List of Candidates) form and submit your improvement fee (approx ₹200-₹300 per subject) to CBSE.

  • Important Note on Syllabus: If you decide to drop a year and give the exam next year, remember that you will have to study the new syllabus for that current year!

The Bottom Line: Don't Settle for Less ๐ŸŒŸ

If you know you deserve an 85% instead of a 65%, take a deep breath, start revising, and take advantage of this CBSE policy.
